Summer in the Hills & Harvest Festival in Lungau
Lungau's Summer in the Hills
Enjoy the countryside, the mountain views, the flora, as well as local folk customs,
all of which are essential aspects of Lungau's "Summer in the Hills".
This includes, of course, an
extensive network of valley buses, theme paths, and self-guided trails, often leading to a variety of
mountain huts and hikers' refuges, alpine inns, snack stations, and mountain restaurants.
Lungau's "Summer in the Hills" will win you over with
its friendly, pleasant atmosphere and with its specialties from the farmhouse
kitchen, such as "rabbit ears", donuts, dumplings, or bacon and cheese from
right there on the farm. To quench your thirst, there is buttermilk with local
Granten (the name for lingonberries here in the Lungau).
The highlight of such a hike in
the hill country is Rahmkoch, or "Lungau alpine marzipan", which is prepared
according to a special recipe in every hut and by every dairymaid.
Harvest Festival
At the end of August, Harvest Festival begins in Lungau and lasts until the
first snow in the valley. The start of Harvest Festival coincides with the
beginning of harvest time, one of the most delightful, flavorful, and colorful
seasons of the year.
Since snow is already on the mountain peaks, the time for
lengthier hiking tours is over, yet you can still hike to the various alpine meadows,
now empty of the cows which have already been herded back down into the valley, and you can enjoy the already yellow larches, the fresh mountain air, and especially the silence.
The focus of
Harvest Festival is rural life, allowing guests to experience regional customs and delicacies
first-hand, such as schnapps distilling, herding the cows from the meadows to the valley, participating in a village festival, or
perhaps a community hike to a mountain hut.
In addition, autumn is the time of mushrooms including chanterelles and porcini, which are available practically everywhere.
